I suggest that you teach your teacher that assigned this project what you just learned, that no such thing as family coats of arms exist, and why. Maybe if you type it up yourself in your words and print it out, you can get extra credit!

Teachers who ask kids to find their family coats of arms don’t know anything whatsoever about genealogy. Mitchell gave you a correct answer.
There is no such thing as a family coats of arms.
Now,the Anglo Saxon people of the American South, even those of humble means, have them in their famiy trees. That does not mean they are entitled to them. Some Southerners have the ones brought over from England, but they don’t display them. Afterall, they can’t buy groceries with them.
Evenn if one has your surname, that doesn’t mean that it belonged to anyone in your family in the past.
Not everyone with the same surname come from the same root. There was a time when people did not have surnames, They took the name of their occupation, like smith, jones, carpenter, barber etc or they took the name of the town they came from. Some took the name of the castle they lived close to. People can make a mistake thinking if they have the name of the castle that their ancestors lived close to that they were related to the owners of the castle.
Some names indicate a person was the son of someone.
Sam that lived on a hill became Sam Hill, but Tom also lived on a hill and he became Tom Hill.
Maybe you can educate your teacher on this.
Actually for the surname Lewis there are about 200 different coats of arms.
These people on the internet are peddlers in coats of arms. There is no law in the United States regarding heraldry and a person is free to display one but it is like putting up a picture of a famous person with your name and claiming him as your ancestor whether you know he is or not.

Okay, this question comes up every week. So I’ll do my best to try and explain Heraldry. Coat of Arms and family crests were not granted to families, they were granted to individuals. Unless you have documented proof of being related to the person granted this Coat of Arms or family crest then your not entitled to use that Coat of Arms. But for your school project you could make your own Coat of Arms, because the companies that sell Coat of Arms on the internet are not legitimate, They take a random Coat of Arms with that person Surname on it and say you can use it when actually you have no proof or connection to it. The College of Arms in London,England can explain Heraldy better for you. But if you need a coat of Arms for school pick any or make your own at least it will be original. Good Luck with your project.http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/

There are several volumes in the larger libraries that have armorial bearings, family crests, etc. But try searching for them on-line. I’d bet you will find some family site with the coats of arms.
